You don't need to stop the machine and release the refrigerant. There is a ball valve that can be opened and closed in just a quarter-turn rather than a stem-type valve. When the valve core is removed, pull out the stem, close the valve on the valve remover, loosen the screw at the end of the tool and take out the valve core.
