Einband leicht berieben. - One of Madela's central themes is the deterioration of Zulu tradition. He considers the loss of tradition as the cause of most of the misfortunes which have befallen the Zulu people. The reign of Shaka (1816-28) is repeatedly mentioned as the beginning, or one of the causes, of this loss of tradition. Shaka is also seen as the incorporation of all the evils that appeared after the "death that was asked for". Madela's view of Shaka as a power-crazed tyrant has been more or less shared by most analysts, althought his talent as a statesman and military genius has also been recognized. Shaka was born in 1787. He served under Dingiswayo and was made chief of the Zulu in 1816. He reorganized the army, introduced new weapons and strategies, and quickly destroyed or incorporated the smaller tribal groups around him.
