The Third Way to General Relativity. Preprint 9. Einstein and Mach in Context. R
A good and very clean copy. - From the Introduction: The relationship between Einstein and Mach is often discussed as a prototypical case of the influence of philosophy on physics.1 It is, on the other hand, notoriously difficult exactly to pinpoint such influences of philosophy on science, in particular with regard to modern physics. To a working scientist it must appear, in any case, as if the period in which such influences were effective belongs to the past. There seems to be little room left for philosophy in the practice of today's physics. It plays no part in the physics curriculum; and scholars who are at the same time active physicists and philosophers are rare exceptions.
