However, compelling concern with the seriously disorganized family on the part of the community and the social work profession has recently been emphasized by results of systematic research into the phenomenon, both here and abroad. Proceeding from a major clarification of working terminology and an examination of pertinent historical and research background, the authors define and test their conceptual basis of identifying and measuring family disorganization. "The main theme of this study," they state, "is the development of knowledge which may lead to an early identification of the multi-problem family"-thus increasing the possibilities for alleviation or prevention.
