The principle underlying this process is this: gold or any other mineral, when rubbed against the rough surface of the touchstone, leaves a streak of fine powder on the stone and this powder shows a more constant colouration than the same mineral in a massive form. Therefore the colour of the streak is a more correct index of the quality of the mineral than its surface colour.
