A good and very clean copy. - From the Introduction: The work of constructing representations on paper has recently been scrutinised in several excellent studies. These papers have carefully traced the way representations come into being by superposing different kinds of inscriptions or systems of signs, tables, numbers, formulas, graphs, diagrams, pictures, photographs, etc., and by manipulating them on paper. In this paper I analyse a specific kind of constructing representations, the building of models of invisible objects closely tied to experimentation. I argue that this particular type of work often applies inscriptions, with or without representational functions, in a way hitherto not sufficiently studied: as tools on paper, or "paper tools," which are, on some level, similar to laboratory tools.
